Our Laboratory Facilities

Our laboratory is situated within the Ontario Cancer Institute (http://www.uhnres.utoronto.ca/institutes/oci/) (OCI) and is also partly based within the STTARR Innovation Centre (www.sttarr.ca) in the MaRS complex (www.marsdd.com). Graduate students are enrolled in the Department of Medical Biophysics or Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto.

Our laboratory is equipped with equipment to facilitate DNA repair and molecular biology experiments (pulsed-field or continuous-field gel electrophoresis, COMET assay, spinning disc microscopy to score nuclear DNA repair foci). We have oxic and hypoxic cell culture facilities and both transmission and inverted fluorescent microscopes for cell biology experiments. Additionally, we also have access to flow cytometry, confocal and 2-photon microscopy core facilities. (AOMF) Both in vitro and in vivo irradiators are available for cell and xenograft studies.

A laser capture microscope is available for dissecting small biopsies for DNA - or RNA - associated molecular pathology. This machine, our new spinning disc microscope, can be used to create subcellular DNA damage using built-in UV-irradiation laser source. These microscopes can also be used for live cell imaging. Facilities for DNA microarrays and proteomics are also available within the institute.
