“Preceptorship is a learning opportunity for health services students in which they gain hands-on experience in a health care setting under the guidance of someone who is experienced in their field. Preceptorship facilitates the transition from the classroom to the workplace and provides support for the new practitioner in the work environment.”

This free three-part certificate course provides an introduction to adult education principles and undergraduate student clinical learning within the University of Toronto/Michener Institute Medical Radiation Sciences (MRS) program. It has been designed for all radiation therapists who provide clinical preceptorship (teaching) to these students. The course is currently being offered to radiation therapists working at Odette Cancer Centre, Princess Margaret Hospital, Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Kingston Regional Hospital and Ottawa General Hospital. Workshops are held at the two GTA centres (PMH and Odette). If you are interested in this course you will need to negotiate professional development time and support with your department manager and/or Clinical Educator (or equivalent).
The Clinical Preceptorship Course comprises of 2 workshops and a self-directed online course for an approximate total course length of about 10 hours.
Course goals:
- To provide interested clinical staff with access to professional development to enhance their teaching skills
- To improve the educational experience of the undergraduate students
- To create a cohort of prepared clinical teachers using the same standard course for MRS clinical sites
To date (July 2010) over 50 Ontario therapists have taken the course. Evaluations from participants have been very favorable, both for course content and delivery. Pre and post course data has also showed a noteworthy difference in self-perceived knowledge using the original course objectives. In addition, modified preceptorship workshops have been offered at several provincial and national conferences.
