The Medical Radiation Sciences (MRS) program is a joint University of Toronto/Michener Institute initiative that produces academic leaders for tomorrow in radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and radiological technology. This three-year full-time health professional program provides graduates with a BSc degree in Medical Radiation Sciences and a Diploma of Health Sciences. The Michener Institute is the only post-secondary educational institution in Canada dedicated to the applied health sciences, combining theory, laboratory practice and clinical education to produce outstanding health professionals. This is uniquely combined with the world-renowned academic excellence in medical education of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto to produce a clinically focused but strongly academic learning experience.
Students enrolled in the radiation therapy discipline gain exposure to all aspects of the profession, including a preclinical curriculum that covers the sciences relevant to the field, communication, ethics, professionalism and research training. Courses are held both at University of Toronto's downtown campus and at the Michener Institute. The Department of Radiation Oncology, Faculty of Medicine has academic oversight for the MRS program and consequently the faculty includes oncologists, physicists and radiation therapists who bring their unique expertise to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to educating the students.
Radiation Therapy MRS students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and get hands-on experience during their clinical practicum at the Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) at Princess Margaret Hospital. The RMP offers outstanding clinical experience with a wide range of programs and technologies in a collegial and supportive interprofessional work environment where clinical preceptors work with the students to gradually immerse them in the professional milieu. Clinical placements give students hands-on practice, experience in different work environments and with other health care professionals, and the opportunity to network with potential employers. Typically, 20-28 students are enrolled each year, making RMP one of the largest radiation therapist education facilities in the world.
