Software Systems

softwaresystems.jpgThe Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) is committed to the development and use of a fully electronic clinical information environment in pursuit of reliable, efficient and safe care.

The radiotherapy management system is deployed throughout the organization and used by all staff for prescription, scheduling and recording of all patient and technical data, including image review, and record and verification of treatment.

Standards of practice have been developed to harness available systems and to provide documentation of patient progress in a completely paperless “e-Chart”. An RMP intranet website provides staff with access to department information using a comprehensive content management system. We have also developed links to upload treatment summary data to the UHN electronic health record system.

The RMP network is robust and redundant and able to support patient-critical treatment functions while remaining linked to the UHN system. Remote access to many clinical and other systems is also supported through secure web access techniques.

The radiotherapy planning process is a complex multi-step endeavour, which requires efficient communication and transparent workflow. An electronic web-based system, “e-Book”, has been developed and deployed to support our across all treatment sites, techniques and linac units. This permits review and approval of treatment plans by clinical staff from local or remote sites. These software tools are being explored in initiatives to enhance quality management of the planning and treatment process.
