Role of Radiation Treatment for Cancer of the Nasal Vestibule
Tumours in this site can be treated either with surgery or radiation therapy. The chance of cure is essentially the same with either approach for all but the most advanced cancers. The disadvantage of surgery is that the cosmetic result may be sub-optimal depending on how much of the nose must be removed, and a complex reconstructive procedure may be required. Radiation therapy alone is used to treat most of these cancers.
Very advanced cancers are sometimes treated with a combination of surgery and radiation therapy as the chance of cure with radiation therapy alone is fairly low. An additional strategy is to combine the radiotherapy with chemotherapy. Alternatively, patients may be treated with radiotherapy more than once daily if the tumour is are large and chemotherapy is not used.
How to Make a Referral
Patients may be referred to one of the radiation oncologists in the Site Group either through the departmental referral process or by contacting one of the physicians directly.
