Role of Radiation Treatment for Pituitary Adenomas
Radiation therapy is used to prevent further growth of pituitary adenomas following surgery, and to control hormonal hypersecretion, if present.
Indications
If there is still persistent of tumour following surgery, radiation treatment may be indicated. If the tumour demonstrates growth and further surgery is not possible, radiation therapy is indicated.
Benefits
Shrinkage of the tumour following radiation therapy, with preservation of vision and possible improvement of symptoms related to the tumour or hormone hypersecretion.
Special Programs
The majority of patients will be treated on the stereotactic treatment program, with the benefit of a highly precise treatment plan and maximal sparing of normal brain tissue from radiation.
How to Make a Referral
Patients may be referred to one of the radiation oncologists in the Site Group either through the departmental referral process or by contacting one of the physicians directly.
