Role of Radiation Treatment for Small Cell Lung Cancer
Radiation treatment offers potentially curative treatment as part of combined modality approaches with chemotherapy for patients with limited stage disease. It also offers palliation of symptoms in extensive stage disease.
Indications
Mediastinal radiation is indicated for patients with limited stage small cell lung cancer, and for selected patients with extensive stage small cell lung cancer. Prophylactic whole brain radiation therapy is often used to prevent brain metastases.
Benefits
Radiation can result in control of tumour growth in the chest, offers relief of symptoms and, in some cases, contributes to the cure of the disease.
