Role of Radiation Therapy in Thymoma
Radiation therapy is used after surgical resection as adjuvant treatment. For cases where surgery is not initially possible, radiation is prescribed, possibly followed by chemotherapy and surgery. Radiation is also used in palliative settings for symptom control.
Indication
Following surgical resection of T2 or T3 thymomas, for unresectable tumours, and in stage IV disease.
Benefit
The addition of radiation can improve changes of local control and contribute to cure.
Special Programs
A phase II study of neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by surgery for high risk potentially resectable thymoma.
How to Make a Referral
Dr. Andrea Bezjak and Dr. Anthony Brade have a particular interest and expertise in this area. They see most of the thymoma patients for a RT opinion.
